I survived a match dart to defeat Kim Huybrechts 6-5 in a dramatic first round game at the European Darts Trophy ET13, as the European Tour event began in Gottingen on Friday.
The clash between us two former European Tour event winners promised to be the tie of the opening round and so it proved, although I looked like a runaway winner as I raced into a 5-1 lead but Kim fought back to level 5-5.
Kim missed a dart at the bullseye for a 121 checkout in a tense deciding leg before I found tops with my last dart to land a high-pressure 78 finish and seal my place in the Unibet European Championship in Dortmund later this month.
“I always believe I can win at any stage of a match, that’s probably why I’ve lasted so long in the game.”
The win set up a second round clash with Gerwyn Price who beat me in the second round of the World Grand Prix the week before.
I was pleased to win the game against Gerwyn Price with a tension-filled 6-5 victory.
For the second game in succession I survived a match-dart before finding the winning double with my last dart in hand to book a meeting with fifth seed Michael Smith in the third round.
Absolutely gutted after such a hard weekend to lose 6-0 to Michael Smith but fair play his finishing was awesome and I had my chances on 5 of those legs.
I love the crowds and I love playing darts so am now looking forward to Barnsley next weekend for the World Series qualifier on the Friday evening followed by the last 2 Pro Tour events of the year !!!!
